The short ‘open learning style’ course provides professionals with non-financial background overview on the role and usefulness of finance in a business or some other organisations. The course does not focus on technical details but covers basic principles and underlying concepts. Finance is pivotal to any organization and some basic knowledge and understanding of it is important in integrated functions. The participants will acquire sufficient background and footing to study finance at advanced levels, and will also have a better understanding of financial decision making within their organisations.

Course objectives:

Upon the completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Understand the role of finance functions within the context of the modern business environment.
  • Use and interpret financial statement information.
  • Understand the roles and functions of financial institutions and markets.
  • Apply basic financial decision-making tools and techniques.

Day 2

Financial institutions and key concepts Financial Markets and key concepts Financial products and key concepts

Day 3

Key financial tools and techniques including: Financial arithmetic Working capital cycle Net present value and payback calculation of projects Risk and uncertainty etc.

Course Trainer:

Dr.Ali Malik is Dean of Academic Affairs at NorthUmbria University Qatar. Dr.Malik has over 20 years of experience in teaching, learning and assessment in higher business education. He has a wide range of qualifications including the following:

  • Industry experience as financial analyst and business manager.
  • Fellow of Higher Education Academy of UK (FHEA)
  • Handling Editor of Inderscience International Journal of Business Performance Management (IJBPM) - an ABS ranked journal.
  • Extensive experience of dissertation supervision at PG and UG level.
  • Experienced in examining and supervising doctoral students.
  • Active researcher with over 18 publications in international journals.
  • Research interest lies in management accounting, islamic banking and finance, issues in accounting and finance and higher business education.
  • Extensive experience as programme leader, external examiner, external expert and subject specialist.
  • Extensive experience in curriculum development.
  • Editorial member and reviewer of a number of international journals.
  • Excellent communication, inter personal and teamwork skills.
